The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is a globally recognized certification that evaluates your ability to communicate effectively in Japanese. JLPT is usually taken as an Academic and professional certification, which focuses on your reading, listening and speaking skills.
It has five levels (N5–N1), where N5 is beginner and N1 is the most advanced. It is jointly administered by the Japan Foundation and JEES, and is recognized by Japanese universities, employers, and government agencies.
For Nepalese students, JLPT is a gateway to higher studies in Japan, scholarships, and job opportunities.
Every level tests three areas:
At beginner levels (N5, N4) you’ll see simple kanji, daily phrases, and short conversations. At advanced levels (N2, N1), expect long passages, technical vocabulary, and fast-paced listening tasks.
These are the 5 levels of the JLPT test. As a beginner, you will start from the N5 level. As you learn more, you can step up to the next level after passing your exams. Each JLPT level targets specific skills, helping you progress from mastering basic phrases to understanding complex texts and conversations.
| JLPT Levels | Proficiency Details |
|---|---|
| N5 | Basic understanding of hiragana, katakana, simple kanji, and everyday phrases |

| N3 | Intermediate level, can handle daily topics and short business exchanges |
