Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT)

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is a globally recognized certification that evaluates your ability to communicate effectively in Japanese. JLPT is usually taken as an Academic and professional certification, which focuses on your reading, listening and speaking skills.

It has five levels (N5–N1), where N5 is beginner and N1 is the most advanced. It is jointly administered by the Japan Foundation and JEES, and is recognized by Japanese universities, employers, and government agencies.

For Nepalese students, JLPT is a gateway to higher studies in Japan, scholarships, and job opportunities.

What Does the JLPT Include?

Every level tests three areas:

  1. Language Knowledge (Vocabulary & Grammar)
  2. Reading Comprehension
  3. Listening Comprehension

At beginner levels (N5, N4) you’ll see simple kanji, daily phrases, and short conversations. At advanced levels (N2, N1), expect long passages, technical vocabulary, and fast-paced listening tasks.

What is JLPT N1, N2, N3, N4, N5?

These are the 5 levels of the JLPT test. As a beginner, you will start from the N5 level. As you learn more, you can step up to the next level after passing your exams. Each JLPT level targets specific skills, helping you progress from mastering basic phrases to understanding complex texts and conversations.

JLPT Levels Proficiency Details
N5 Basic understanding of hiragana, katakana, simple kanji, and everyday phrases
N4 Ability to read and understand simple passages, conversations, and basic grammar
N3 Intermediate level, can handle daily topics and short business exchanges
N2 Upper intermediate, required by most Japanese employers and universities
N1 Advanced, near-native fluency; highly valued for academics, jobs, and government roles

How is the JLPT Exam Taken?

  • Format: JLPT is a paper-based exam, not available online.

  • Schedule: Conducted twice a year (July & December). In Nepal, usually one session is offered annually.

  • Registration: You can apply through the Japan Foundation’s local test centers or official JLPT portal.

Who is the JLPT for?

Anyone can take the JLPT, regardless of age or nationality. Most test-takers are:

  • Students applying to universities in Japan
  • Professionals seeking Japanese corporate jobs
  • Applicants for work visas (JLPT N1/N2 adds visa points)
  • Language learners aiming for an internationally recognized certificate

What are the Benefits of JLPT?

Taking the JLPT opens up many doors if you’re planning to study, work, or live in Japan. Here’s why it matters:

  • University Admissions
Most universities in Japan ask for JLPT scores to check if you can handle classes in Japanese.
  • Scholarships
A good score, especially at N2 or N1, makes your MEXT or JASSO scholarship application much stronger.
  • Jobs in Japan
Many companies prefer candidates with JLPT, and in some fields, it’s a requirement.
  • Visa Advantage
If you’re aiming for Japan’s Highly Skilled Professional Visa, JLPT N1 or N2 gives you extra points.
  • Personal Growth
Apart from fulfilling study or work requirements, JLPT also gives you a clear path to improve your Japanese, step by step, from beginner (N5) to advanced (N1).
